Centurions lose to GRCC, 86-77
After its inaugural season began last week, the Montcalm Community College (MCC) Centurions men’s basketball team played Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) on Wednesday, Nov. 6, experiencing an 86-77 loss.
After losing their season-opening game against Lake Michigan College Nov. 1, MCC’s first official basketball game after a 40-year hiatus, the Centurions (0-2 overall, 01 MCCAA Northern) looked to earn their first win for the rejuvenated program against the Raiders (2-1 overall, 1-0 MCCAA Western), battling back and forth in the first half, with the Raiders leading only by two – 43-41 – going into halftime.
Though MCC managed to keep pace, GRCC pulled ahead for good, eventually outscoring the Centurions 43-36 in the second half to earn a nine-point win.
As he did in MCC’s first game, freshmen point guard Taylen Carver (Louisville, KY) led the Centurions with 22 points. It is the second game in a row Carver has scored 22 points, both times leading the team in scoring.
Freshman center Josiah DeMeester (Grandville, Mich.) collected six rebounds to lead MCC and freshman guard Dorian Allen (Winter Haven, Fla.) had five assists.
NEXT UP: The Centurions will host the Owens Community College Express (0-2 overall, 0-0 Ohio Community College Athletic Conference) at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.
Last February, OCC won the Region XII championship for the first time since 2018. This year, so far, the Express lost 85-57 to Henry Ford College and dropped a close one, 70-67, to Schoolcraft College in their last game Nov. 6.
